Quail Unlimited® Nesting and Brood Cover Mix
|

Quail Unlimited, America's Leader in Quail Conservation and Sharp Bros. Seed Company, the nation's largest native grass seed company, have partnered to provide low-cost quail nesting and brood mixes for landowners and quail enthusiasts.
The native grass and forb mixes available from QU and Sharp Bros. are designed to provide the short, bunch grass growth form that is preferred by bobwhites. In addition to the grasses, a variety of preferred forbs are included to provide overhead structure and attract insects for ideal bugging sites for quail chicks. These grass and forb mixtures can be planted along field borders, non-farmed odd areas, forest openings and abandoned crop fields, and to replace nonnative species that provide poor quail habitat such as fescue and Bermuda grass.
Two mixes are available at this time. One, known as the "Eastern Mix", is designed for areas receiving more than 35 inches of rainfall per year. This mix contains grass varieties that will remain at preferred quail height even in higher rainfall areas. The second mix, known as the "Western Mix", has a small amount of taller grass varieties added and is adapted to sites receiving less than 35 inches of rainfall per year.
Both of the mixes are sold by the number of acres to be planted. Each mix is about 7.5 bulk pounds per acre. The cost of each mix is $50 per acre plus shipping for individuals. Small order shipping is via UPS. The Clinton, Missouri plant will ship via truck freight with 50 acres (minimum - 375 pounds) to save shipping costs.

Quail Unlimited® Food Plot Mix

uail Unlimited, wildlife professionals and seed company representatives have designed a food plot mix adapted to any region of the bobwhite range.
This special mix is a combination of several varieties of red and white sorghums and up to 5 maturities ranging from 55 to 100 days. The mix is a blend of sorghums, some that grow tall to resist deer damage, and a variety of grain sorghums in a combination of maturities, heights and grain colors. The food plot mix is highly adapted to varying climatic conditions and soil types. The shorter maturing varieties will provide grain early in late summer and early fall with the later maturing varieties providing quail food for late winter.
Research
"Studies have shown that access to high energy grains increases the fat reserves of wintering bobwhites and increases their ability to withstand winter stress periods," says Roger Wells, QU National Habitat Director. "In many parts of the bobwhite range, winter is the most critical time for survival and winter losses may take years to recover."
QU food plot mix is packaged in 25-pound bags, enough to plant 2 1/2 to 5 acres, depending on the planting method used. The cost is $25.95 per bag plus shipping.
