The National Seed Program is the single largest activity performed by Quail Unlimited chapters. Each year, several national seed companies donate surplus seed to Quail Unlimited. The seed, consisting primarily of grains used to develop winter feeding and cover sites for quail, is then distributed to chapters across the country for use in their food and cover planting projects.

Seed is shipped by the full semi load, which averages 850 bags. The seed is in 50-lb. bags with the exception of sunflower. Bags of sunflower range in size from 20-lb. to 40-lb. depending on the seed company. The types of seed that we have received in the past through the National Seed Program are corn, forage sorghum, milo (grain sorghum), soybeans, sunflower, and wheat. Availability of seed is entirely dependent upon what is declared surplus by the companies. This is surplus seed, may be below standard germination, and must be planted and left standing for wildlife.

The cost of getting the seed to chapters is as follows: Quail Unlimited has a $1.50 per bag handling charge and some seed companies also have a handling charge of $1.00 per bag. The cost of the trucking is the responsibility of the chapter or hunting preserve that will be receiving the seed. A trucking estimate can be obtained for you at no obligation.
