Kevin Slates is an experienced Wildlife Management Biologist in Missouri,
and will provide instruction on Intermediate Prescribed Burn Training
seminars at the 2007 Wildlife EXPO hosted by Quail Unlimited. Participants
should have completed a basic or level 1 course prior to attending this
seminar.
With over 20 years experience in planning, conducting, and using prescribed
burns as a valuable habitat tool on public lands in Kansas and Missouri,
Kevin will instruct workshop participants in intermediate prescribed fire
planning and tactics. Topics that will be covered are: How to develop a burn
plan (Identify your objectives); How to prepare for a burn (site prep,
etc,); How to conduct a burn; How to monitor your results (Post-Burn
Evaluation) plus more.
Of the three levels of burn training available as a Quail Unlimited member,
basic or level 1, Intermediate, and finally Advanced or the Fire Boss, this
education is critical for the proper use of prescribed burns. Level 1, the
introductory or basic prescribed burn training is a prerequisite to take the
Intermediate course. Proof of training must be provided, (Certificate of
completion, etc.) Burn teams are typically made up of a minimum of 4 team
members, including a Fire Boss who is in charge of the burn and its
participants. The members of the team must have completed Level 1, or the
basic prescribed burn training, to be covered under QU¹s controlled burn
insurance program.
Knowing the immense benefit of controlled burning as a habitat tool, a
unique and huge benefit provided by Quail Unlimited to all its qualified
members, is insurance coverage for those that wish to conduct prescribed
burns using a fully completed and approved burn plan. The basic training, or
level 1, is required as a prerequisite for the Intermediate course. However,
to be on a burn team, Level 1 is all that is required. Once completing Level
1, members may obtain more training by taking the Intermediate course which
then qualifies members to take the Advanced Prescribed Burn Training,
producing a qualified Fire Boss, the on site burn and burn plan manager who
is required on each burn team.
